While Mama Nomad’s parents were visiting us, one of the things they wanted to do was to see the leaves in Vermont. It was on our agenda as well. So we made a plan of it.
We woke up early and headed towards Vermont. From Connecticut, we took the interstate through Massachusetts until we got to the Mohawk Trail in Greenfield. Mama Nomad read that this was a good road to see the leaves turn as well. We saw some beautiful scenery along this route, but it was not the leave turning views we were seeking. I will say, however, we did see some great views in Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts. And, along the way, we encountered a beautiful covered bridge.
From Mohawk Trail, we took Mass 8 towards Vermont. Now, this little road is not well known. However, I will tell you that we saw some great sights of leaves along this stretch of road. We saw vibrant reds that contrasted against yellows and reds. Mass 8 turns into Vermont 8 and continues onto connect to VT 100. This is the famous road to travel along to see the much lauded Vermont leave changing views.
We traveled this road for a few hours until we reached Weston, Vermont. This town had a “must see” General Store in it. I asked Mama Nomad, “what is the name of the store?” I wanted to know in case there was more than one general store. She was not sure and I was looked at like “more than one general store…really?” In any other town that may have been a realistic questionable look. But, in this town that was famous for a general store, I felt there may be a copy cat. Guess what? Two general stores right across the road from each other.
Mama Nomad remembered that the one that was famous was the Vermont Country Store. We parked and went in. Oh my gosh! This place had almost everything, from clothes and toys to maple syrup and cheese. It seemed like it went on forever and had more than one floor. If you want a Vermont souvenir, you can throw a rock in any direction and find one here.
After over an hour of exploring the Country Store and grabbing a bite to eat next door, we decided to turn around and head back to home base. I will be the first to admit. When Mama Nomad said “let’s go look at leaves changing” I was the first to think “really? leaves changing is a thing?” Now I am the first to admit how far off base I was. I can’t describe it accurately. The leaves are such a contrast in vibrant reds, bright yellows, crisp greens and shades in between that it is something really worth seeing. I now know why people travel to the area to take in the natural beauty. Safe Travels.
