After we left Connecticut, we had a quandary. We needed to be in Missouri by the beginning of March but it was the end of January. We needed a place to stay for one month. One month! We have never setup a home base for just one month. Let me clarify that. We have pulled into places, mainly with family, and lived out of suit cases for less than a month. But, we have never unloaded our trailer, setup our technology infrastructure, made the house our home and stayed anywhere for less than two months.
So, what were we to do. We, of course, did not want to drive out of our way. So, Mama Nomad and I plotted the course from Connecticut to Missouri. We chose a route that would give us scenery we had not experienced; through all of Pennsylvania, Ohio and part of Indiana. Trevor and I really wanted to visit Mammoth Cave, the longest cave system in the world. So, that left us with one choice: Kentucky.
Mama Nomad found us a cabin that was 20 to 30 minutes from Mammoth Cave, in Glasgow Kentucky. First, let me tell you that the word “cabin” does not correctly describe this place. It is built in a cabin style. But, this is not your little cabin in the woods that you think of from TV Shows. This is a grand Kentucky Cabin.
This place is over 3000 square feet and three stories high. It has 4 bedrooms, 3.5 bathrooms and can sleep up to 18 people! That is a little more than what most would perceive as a “cabin.” The whole inside is wooden with exposed beams and supports. The front door has a little hatch to open and see who is at the door. Honestly, it made me feel like I was in a castle. You will have to see and use it to understand.
One of the many great things about our lifestyle is that we experience what it is to live in many houses with a great variety of amenities and features. And we are able to do so with more than just a “vacation” type approach. We really get to use the amenities. This place gave me a new perspective on a few.
First, we are a family of five and three are growing young men. We like to eat good food so we cook a lot. This had a 6 burner gas stove. This gave us more than enough cooking space to get all of our pots and pans going. It was complemented with a convection oven, which took some getting used to. But, ultimately found it as a great addition. The kitchen also had deep sinks, which is a bonus for us because of all the dishes we use and, it allows us to easily fill our portable distillation system.
Next, let’s jump into the master bathroom. I have never used a rain shower before. And, after using one here, I honestly do not want to shower without one again. I loved it. Then, when I stepped out of the shower, the tile floor was heated. You read that correctly…heated. You can set it to be a certain temp when you wake up, shower and go to sleep. It was a wonderful touch that I truly enjoyed.
The Kentucky house had a finished basement with a walk out. One room was used as an entertainment room. the boys were able to play their games and watch their shows on a huge LCD TV and, they were able to do so without the volume bothering Mama Nomad and me, in the living room on the main floor while we watched TV or talked by the light of the gas powered fireplace.
The house is right on the Barren River Lake and it offers plenty of outdoor space with a deck on the main floor and outdoor seating on the lower level. Depending upon the time of the year, the water levels are different. When we were there, the water was down and the river was a creek about 10 foot wide. But, you can definitely tell that the river bed, behind the house, stretches to about 100 yards wide. We didn’t mind the low water, it made it easier to explore up and down the river bank.
Even though our time was short in this “cabin”, the whole family enjoyed our stay here in our layover to Missouri. We saw caves (more than one), jaunted over to Nashville and more, all from this locale. If you are interested in checking it out, visit Home Away and type in 404432vb into the search box. Tell John, the owner, that the Nomads sent you. Safe Travels.
