As we traveled around the United States, we were asked a plethora of questions such as:
1) How do you support yourself?
2) How do you find places to stay?
3) What am I going to need?
And so, so, so much more.
We did our best to answer the questions as they arose in a “one-off” fashion, at times, we would write posts (which can be found in How We Do It) and we created a Get Started Guide with the 20 tools you need to get started like we did.
Well, author Chris Backe took the time to write a step by step guide of how to become a digital nomad and create the lifestyle you want.
Step By Step Guide To Becoming A Digital Nomad
By now, you’ve probably heard the term ‘digital nomad’. (If you haven’t, the BBC has called digital nomads “a growing demographic of location-independent professionals who can work remotely from anywhere on Earth and customize their travel to where they feel the most inspired.”). In short, a digital nomad lives, works, and experiences life as they choose.
They take jobs or gigs that can be done anywhere they have an internet connection, whether that means adapting a job they currently do or simply changing locations to accommodate their interests.
Live where it’s warm year-round, find a place where your money goes a lot further, or find a city that’s the size of your liking, whether big or small — in other words, be challenged to start living life on your terms.
While full of solid advice, the book cautions that you need to do the work yourself. ‘Becoming a Digital Nomad’ walks the reader through the step-by-step process in a way the author wishes was available years ago. An entire chapter focuses on testing the lifestyle out, and is a great way to discover what’s involved before making any larger commitments.\
The book also contains 12 worksheets, which can be anonymously filled out online and printed as a PDF, or printed off and filled out offline (no personal information is ever asked for either way).
This 2nd edition (also called the 2019 edition) has been expanded and updated with helpful resources, and aims to demystify the lifestyle while breaking down stereotypes. You’ll read people’s personal stories of how the digital nomad lifestyle transformed their lives, of what they do now to support themselves, and benefit from the book’s decades of experiences and dozens of voices.
