Snow In Kentucky

We just moved our home base from Connecticut to Kentucky, in our push westward. One of the things we were looking forward to while wintering in Connecticut was the snow. I was hopeful, being that far north, that we would get to enjoy playing in the snow. While we were there, it only snowed twice. The first time was really light. However, the second time more than made up for it. We stepped right into a winter wonderland movie set.

Nonetheless, I was hoping for multiple occurrences of snow while in Connecticut. So, when we left, I thought we were leaving all that behind us. We arrived in Kentucky at the beginning of February and the temperatures were mild (it even hit in the 60’s F / 15.5 C). Well, to my great surprise, I looked at the weather forecast and saw snow! At first I thought that I forgot to change my locale on my weather app. Nope! It was set for Kentucky.

As you may be able to tell, having snow in Kentucky was not what I was expecting. Why you may ask? Good question. I am originally from Southern Georgia. This is known as the Deep South. A place where snow does not visit. In my life on this planet, I remember snow hitting the ground exactly one time. Sure, it snows in Northern Georgia. But I always chalked that up to it being in the mountains. And, we all know it snows in the mountains. Heck! It even snows on some of the mountain tops in Hawaii.

I consider Kentucky to be part of the south. And, I am not in the mountains. So, it really took me by surprise to see snow here. Upon further consideration, I thought about Virginia. It is part of the south. And it snowed while we were there; check out Snow Days 1 and Snow Days 2. But, again, that was further north and we were in a mountain valley just down the road from a ski resort.

I am the only one of the Nomads that was surprised. I guess it is because the rest of the family had no preconceived notions of snow in the south. Well, after this, neither will Daddy Nomad. Safe Travels.

Update 02/14/16.

While most people are celebrating Valentine’s Day today, we are looking out of our windows in bewilderment. We had an entire day of snow dumping on us; to the tune of 5 to 6 inches or more. It definitely beats the snow from a few days ago. Check this out.
