Utah Hiking Home Base

When looking for a home base in Southern Utah, there were a lot of factors we had to take into consideration. There were so many places we wanted to hike in the area, plus we wanted to go to Southern California and Las Vegas, Nevada. Well, after searching high and low, long and hard, we found a diamond in the rough in a little town with about 820 people in it. It met all of our requirements and then some. We found our Utah Hiking Home Base.

We knew we wanted to hike in Zion National Park as well as the Dixie National Forest. We also knew there were an abundance of trails in the St. George Area. So, trying to find a centrally located place to all of this was our first priority. Then we wanted access to Interstates, if possible, to be able to easily get to Las Vegas and Southern California.

Well, Leeds is located about 15 miles north of St. George right off of Interstate 15. And it is right in between Zion National Park and Dixie National Forest. The access to the Interstate is quite effortless. And, there are hiking trails that are walking distance or a few miles away. We hit the jackpot with this place.

The house itself is set back from the main road by about 100 yards. Which, that really does not matter because there is not much traffic. Although there are houses around it, the surroundings are not loud. And the house has trees all around it which gives you a feeling of privacy. When you sit down to eat, you can look out of the patio doors and have a great view of mesas in the distance. When you are standing in the kitchen, you can see a range of mountains. Great scenery complements this house.

Home base is a two-story house. Although, the first story is where the garage. It is built like a walkout basement. The upper floor is actually at ground level and grants you access through three doors. The house has three bedrooms with comfortable beds. The master has an additional day bed with a trundle.

There are also two bathrooms, a utility room, big living room, dining room that seats 6, good-sized kitchen and a covered patio with a gas grill. The kitchen was stocked with cookware, utensils, appliances and some spices. For those of you who want to carry nothing but clothes, this place will work for you. All you need to go and buy are groceries, which can be purchased from the local market or from Costco, Natural Grocers or Albertsons in St. George.

The property owners live near by and they are literally some of the nicest people you will ever meet. They had the right balance of checking in on you to make sure everything was okay and letting you enjoy your stay uninterrupted. The husband/father of the family was very knowledgeable about all of the surrounding area. He told us about some places that no tourists would commonly know. If you stay here, I would pick his brain.

It took some searching to find this place. But I sure am happy that we did. It was literally the perfect place for The Nomads to use for our Utah Hiking Home Base. If you are coming to the St. George Area and need a place to stay, contact Brian and Shelly and I am sure they will take great care of you.
